Does anyone what this is?

Yesterday I swapped out my tired old OE alternator with a nice new (to me) S5 alternator. While I had both alternators out I could get a good look under my carb....and I saw this thing, just laying there on the intake. It looks like it would be some sort of cap or something? I looked around and it did see anything that looked out of place or like it might need a cover (my car was bone stock and mostly original equipment, so it may have been there for years).
Does anybody have any suggestions....is it important (probably not, but)?

its the cover that goes over the mixture screw so you can't tamper with it

funny part #1; save it for the concours restoration!

#2; its a federal crime to pop that off, im sooooo calling the cops right now

Yep, it's a Federal Crime to take that thing off. Do you have a good lawyer?

factory service manual says that a hacksaw must be used to cut the cap in two in order to adjust the mixture...i've also found several laying on the intake manifold. i just toss them in my carb parts drawer. no need to reinstall it but they are neat to save.
