Well, the oil metering pump was removed on my 7 and the smell of mixed gas is all over the cabin when I drive. Anyone insulate the interior firewall to remedy this?
Here's a couple of pics of my wet 7 to look at while your thinking of an answer.

It was eliminated and where it used to sit blocked off. The exhaust is all pretty much new so there is no exhaust leak. The smell comes from the engine compartment. The smell is strong when I have the hood up comming from the carb, so it's seeping to the cabin somehow.
I'm wondering if that sound deadner that is used for sound systems would work. I gotta do something. It's cool at first but gives ya a headache after a while with the windows up.

My Holley is rich and it doesn't make my car stink that bad. I think you may have some carb tune issues. I have all emissions equipment removed and I eliminated the return line and charcoal canister and my rx-7 still doesn't very stinky.

The fumes are getting drawn in through the vent intake at the bottom of the windshield (between the wiper blades). Rather than trying to confine the smell to the engine bay, I would suggest that you look for a permanent solution. It should not be doing that.

Has the exhaust and painted components that get hot had time for the paint to burn off yet?
Could the smell be from the paint burning off the new exhaust system or something such as that?
I would think the oil shouldn't smell that much.
Race fuel gives off a stronger smell (while being burned) than any 2 stroke oil I've ever smelt.

The paint has been dry for a long time. It is a distinct 2 cycle and gas smell (like a chain saw) Could it be the 2 cycle oil that i'm using? I don't drive the car much just a ride around on Saturdays. My last gas stop I did premix a little rich. The RX-7 does smoke a little on start up, once it's in operating temp purrs like a kitten.

I see.
So what type are you using? What's the ratio?
From my 2stroke motocross experience, I do see different oils may smell slightly different. But it's all top of the line stuff.
Tell me your not running the crap they sell at walmart for boats?
Yes, none of the 2-stroke premix oils sold at your local motorcycle shop will smell.
Of course considering your ratio is not extremely rich. I'd guess above 32:1 will not smell and smoke. 16:1 probably will start smelling/smoking out the exhaust, but not when unburnt, near the carburator.
Interesting problem.
Just out of curiousity, How do you deal with making the oil/gas mix well?
It's more difficult on a cold day. We really shake the can well before putting the premixed fuel in the bike. I'm sure you have a way for this. I've never looked into it for a car, I don't know. I might be wrong, but imagine if the car sat for a while, depending on where the pick up tube is, you could get very different ratio's actually going into the filter/pump.

If the pre-mix is too much the excess could be burning out your exhaust and getting into the cabin somehow. My exhaust is new also and I had to check again and retighten with locknuts to fix any small leaks. I was getting a smell coming into the cabin too. After double checking the exhaust for leaks and fixing the shifter tunnel area, (replacing the rubber cover under the shift boot) my car doesn't smell anymore at least in the interior. The shifter area was allowing in the smell and it would become 10x's worse when the sunroof or a window was cracked from pulling in a cross ventilation situation... or sumthin like that. You should also check the seals around your taillight/rear area to make sure the fumes from the end of your exhaust system isn't leaking into the cabin somehow. Just some suggestions....

Looking good buddy! Glad to see you're having fun with her...
I'm pretty sure when the carb was rebuilt (not by me) that larger jets were installed as a performance modification. I always sort of wondered if those larger jets were causing tuning issues. You might try changing the jets. I think she'll give you some good results if you do. Just a suggestion...

To update everyone on the problem, it ended up being user error. I took a trip down to Chicago thinking I had enough 2 cycle, and I didn't so I ended up using a cheaper kind. Since I don't drive it much I forgot about it.
Last weekend I took a nice long spirited drive to burn the premix that was in it. I then filled up with regular and MMO. Much better now. Plus I finally installed poly on the doors and put in my door panels.
I love the way she runs and sounds, so I don't want to change the jets.
