Does anybody want 83-85 white face gauges?

I've just finished my white face gauges. I can't attach them 'cause the files are too big. If you're interested in seeing them PM me with your e-mail address and I'll send you some JPEG's.

Send me a pic at nuke_pele@hotmail.com and I'll host em for posting here.

I'd like to compare them to JoseReyse's (sp?) as he's been selleing em on this forum for a LONG time, and they look fantabulous.

What are they made of? Paper or plastic stickum stuff burned with a laser printer, or molded plastic like the stock ones but white?

Thanks,

These are just the overlays. They are laser printed on photograph paper(glossy finish). I could print them on sticky back paper, but they wouldn't be as crisp and clear.

Also..... I think I made a typo in the thread title. I have 83-85 faces not 81-82. I believe the 81 and 82 faces are different.

The sticker ones will last longer, the Photo paper will not last with moisture problems, over time (a year or so) it will warp and peel.

High quality glossy-sticky backed paper is out there. Sorry, I can't tell you specifically where or what brand, but I know it is there. Try an art supply store, or a book and stationary store if there are any near you.

I did find some, and it looks nce and glossy, but still not as glossy as Premium paper. however at the distance we are from the gauges there is no real noticeable differance.

What would the moisture be from? I've never seen any moisture in my cluster.

just plain old weather humidity, unless you live in AZ or have a climate controled garage, hehe
it took about 6 months before it started to warp. and got so bad it would keep the needles from moving smoothly.
of course you could just replace them every 6 months, after you get bored and make new ones to look differnt, hehe

Jose did mine, and while they look good during the day, they look like *** at night. Its just because of the way the photo paper is compared to the factory overlay, the factory ones deflect the light off the bulbs, and the photo paper doesn't

Are there hot spots where the face is really bright where the bulb is and very dull on the other side of the face? This was a major concern of mine and I asked Jose if this would happen.
I think I have done something to the face itself that should fix that problem, but I have to get them in my car to check it out. It might take a few days to get this done.

Felix,
What other problems are you running into with your faces? I want to know so I can try to figure any probs out before I install mine. Thanks.

Jim

I just talked to a collegue that used to do silk-screening. The problem with the current technique is white paint on the gauge face is too opaque for light transmittance. I asked him if it'd be better if I left the face clear and attached the photopaper to it and he said it might not be transparent enough. Silk-screening seems to be the best method because he can use transparent colors unlike laser printers, but it will not be glossy at all, it will be flat. I will try the photopaper on clear faces and see what kind of transparency I get.

Are there any art or paint guru's that can help us out.

The way Jose did mine was to strip the black off, so there is only the clear backing piece left. Then he glued the photo paper to them. The bulbs show through exactly where they are instead of lighting up just the numbers. If you look at the back of the stockers you can see how it is done.

Here's a pic of mine :
