i think the major drawback of drifting a first gen is the steering. its too freakin' slow!

i slide mine, i love the feel of it, the steering may be slow for some but it fits my style well. any way i'm sure there are things you can to to quicken the steering. right now im working on the pwoer situation, drifting is own thing, but fighting to always keep the wheels spinning is growing thin.

Hey, they make a rack and pinion conversion for the 1st gens
http://cpracing.ca/cgi-bin/online/storepro.php
I think thats the site, you'll have to scroll down abit, It's a chunk of change though $850.00 (thats USD) You can't even begin to understand how great this is, and if your looking to drift or road race like SCCA-R it cleans up the handling. Its worth every penny, There is no play in the steering wheel, all movement is directly transfered to the wheels with almost no free play. But when it comes to power, you wont need much Rx-7's are light, balanced, and overall there RWD. If you got the cash and you going to drift this is what you want. Wow is it just me or does that sound like a sales pitch? lol!

BTW forgot this conversion allows you to use 225/40/17 or 17inch wheels that are 8.5 inches wide, It actually stiffens the front of the car because of how it is mounted and you keep factory ground clearance, and I'm reading it now and it say is lighter than the factory linkage. so anyway....

I did the R&P conversion, my own flavor, not CP racing and yes the FB is great for drifting. Yesterday I ordered from Ground Control the U Weld coilover kit w/400lb 7in coils and 200lb rear Eibach springs. I'll be selling my Racing Beat spring set once I get this set up installed.
Also doing the REspeed big brake conversion (redrilling to 4x110) and the Camber Plates.
I'll post pics of the setup once I get it all done.

I was wondering to improve stability if you could swap in a second gens rear end to make use of the fully independent suspension? just wishful thinking. You'd also get rear disc brakes and a five lug hub!

So the R&P setup you did do you mean its custom? because if so what was the donor car? Just curious

84' VW Rabbit, I am going to upgrade to a FC R&P and move the connection point to the front of the hub instead of the rear. This is pretty advanced and not for anyone that cannot weld, fab steel and think outside the box for solutions as you go. In the 10 hours it took me to fab my R&P I changed my direction about 3 times during the process as new problems appeared. The ratio on the Rabbit rack is not what I need for Drift hence the need to change it to another type of rack. I'm not set on a FC rack, I just happen to have one on the shelf along with the steering column.

Hmmmmm.... Sounds tempting Because I dont really like the CP racing setup, its a huge improvement but I think it could be better, besides I want stiffer bracing up front anyway
