Yep yep!

I've been watching this video on repeat... the car control is very subtle. The throttle controlling is standard stuff, let off (transfer load forward) to tighten the line and accelerate (transfer load rearward) to widen the line. But it's the transitioning from a left drift to a right drift that get me.

Drifting around a lefthand corner. Countersteer slightly more into the corner while simultaneously letting off a little. These two moves seem to counteract and complement each other - the additional countersteering changes the loading on the front tires - they no longer provide any lateral acceleration because they steer fully into the side. The car now starts to move in a straight line instead of an arc. The rear tires climb up the traction curve and "flip" the rear around, just as in the start of a tank slapper. The letting off seems to accomplish three things - it makes the rear tires' grabbing less forceful, it makes the transition from pointing in one direction to the other occur quicker since there's less downwards load on the rear tires, and it allows you to shift weight rearwards again and re-set the chassis to the new drift angle for the next corner.

Again, very subtle, artful driving! I can only hope to have that level of skill and confidence. Then again my lap times would go all to hell, I'd stop concentrating on the perfect line and just want to have fun "FLIP the rear around thisaway, slide slide slide FLIP around the other way, slide slide slide slide..."

I'm STILL transferring.

Little lesson folks, when you're using FTP, make sure to set transfer type to binary BEFORE you spend 2 hours uploading a file! D'oh !!!

ftp.zeroglabs.com/Upload_Files/oridodrift.mpg

While you're there also get /Car_Movies/movies1/Best_Motoring_Mazda_RX7.mpg which is Keiichi Tsuchiya drifting an FD. Even better smoothness and control.

User/pass are rx7/rx7. Have fun.
