When I was 14 and when me and my dad was car shoping (test driving for fun) we stoped by the mazda dealer ship. And I never heard of a rotory in my life. My dad told me what a rotory was and all I said that is strange motor. But now I have a rotory motor

The 6 ports have verrible port timming. So kinda like vtec. My biggest pet pieve is the "no redline" myth. "You know those rotaries have no redline." Or when I'm on the track some ******* trying to tell me how to drive saying that shifting at 7k is way too early, and that I should be shifting at 16,000 rpm!

People keep asking me if I have to pull the motor out to do oil changes. I've had that several times. Maybe a long time ago when they first came out you had to, but I can't emagine that. Who would build a motor that had to be pulled every 3K?

Other comments:

"Is that a Porsche?"
"Look, it's a Miata!" --> I get this for my RX-8 as well
"That's front wheel drive isn't it?"
"What kind of car is that? It went by so fast it was blurry!" --> Just kidding, I made that one up!
"You know, you should wait before you turn it off to let the turbo cool down."
"You should put a small block in it, then it'll really be fast!"
"What's wrong with your car? It sounds like it's missing on one of the cylinders."

"So you don't have pistons?" "No." "So how many pistons does it sort of have?" "None." "Like what is it equivalent to?" "Two rotors." "So is it like a 4 cylinder?" "No. It's a two rotor." "Is it sort of like a V-8?" "Ugh. No. It's more like a 5.75 cylinder engine." (At this point my friend realized that I had given up on explaining.)

Another occasion:

"Pop the hood." <pop and lift> "I don't know why I thought I would actually see the rotors."

"is it single or double?" what do you mean? "turbos"... none, why dont you just look at the exhaust manifold? 85 stock rx7.

This guy had an rx7 on his propertiy, he was holding it for a friend. told me it was real fast, and could rev till, or past, 21,000 rpm. didnt know it had a DKM in it... dumbass

"those engines don't last long" I just sold one with 190K on the origanal motor "Oh."

had a 12A, with nothing but the bare block out of the car, on a hoist, in the junk yard. "hey is that a 4 or 6 cylander?" from here if you cant tell that its obviously non of the above... i just dont know.

Ok, really, how knowledgable where you about your car before you where on this site? Your job as an owner is to educate those who do not know. Since rotaries are not that common, everyone just thinks cars are all piston.

I carry an old valve, when I get told my timing is bad or a valve is burnt, I show it to them, they stare and say, "It still runs"....

I get the "how many cylinders?" thing all the time....
One guy insisted that my car "sounds like its burning oil" ... i said "of course it is, its oil injected" and he responded with "no no, its running rich"... ummmm ok?
My dad told me that the rotarys dont last long when i bought it... it has 155k on it now.
I also let him drive it once, and he claimed it had no power at all, so I asked when he was shifting... 4k. I just laughed and told him not to shift till he heard a beep... that shut him up.

yeah I have gotten the "so its a 4 cyl ?" many times also. You know about 25 years ago when I was in high school, you could take a class on autos. It was pretty detailed and the class pulled an engine, etc. Now that I think about it, I NEVER heard a word about rotary engines. Im from the midwest, I wonder if the same kinda thing happened,or is still happening in high school auto classes or even ASE courses today.

Reading these posts is pure entertainment- "pump 3 for the porsche" haha it goes on and on..
One thing also, the first gen sold well, so its kinda odd how many people have never seen them or have all these funny occurances- however I think its due to marketing- there were NO mazda dealerships in many large populated areas from 79-85. I never saw ONE until I moved to el paso area in like '86, and then the second gens were just starting to roam. I think most were out on the west coast initailly, then it moved east.

so they are mentioning rotarys and at least giving a summary of the principles, sounds great ! I guess we are making progress ha

When I look back at all the comments Ive had about my first gens, they are mostly positive, if not all positive in some way. If someone says something out of not knowing.. its funny. I think I only have heard a few real negatives about them.

I guess one reason for that is because the car is so good looking, the design was years ahead of its time, and it really turned heads back then. about the only real negative things I heard were like.. it "sucks in the snow " or you cant " haul anything " haha

You mean like the way every time I tell people I changed to motor becuase the old one was burning coolant, they inevitably say "Probably the head gasket". Yes people say stupid things about my car.

Usualy I do try to teach though. Last time I got the "No redline myth", I told him exactaly what does happan to a stock 12A at 10K or so. You can abuse the redline a lot in these cars without any obvious damage though, so I guess that's how these things get started.
