Do I really need the exhaust manifold heat shield?

I'm going to be performing some work around my exhaust system. Do I really need that heat shield that's covering the exhaust manifold? It's barely even on there and if it's not needed, I'll just yank that sucker off. But, I don't want to do that if it's better to keep it on there.

If you have a 12A carbureted 7, maybe you can remove the heat shield.
But if it's a 13b EGI, I do not suggest that you do so since the engine bay is almost full of wires etc. You wont believe the importance of a heat shield!

The heat shield is keeping radiant heat away from the intake manifold. Since heat rises it is better to leave the shield on when you are still running the stock exhaust.

I've even heard of and seen heat shields on RB headers. The thermal reactor heat shields fit pretty well. I've used them myself.

Only shot I'll probably be able to get off is from under the car, due to the intake plenum blocking the view from up top. Why do you want a picture?
