I used an Autometer 2 - 5/8" gauge. Pulled out the round vent directional thingy and tried to press in the gauge. At this point it was still too tight so I cut out the 1/4" thick surround and tried again.
Now the gauge was slightly too loose. The easy solution... I took the cardboard surround that sits around the back of the gauge while it's in the box and put it back on. It's now in there really snug, although I can still get it out without any real effort. It's never come loose from any of the spirited driving I've thrown at it.
What gauge are you getting?

Or you could put a gauge where the clock goes. Fits almost perfect, had to grind a tiny bit off the console, then I hot-glued the gauge to the console from the back. Putting the gauge there you've already got power lines run to the gauge for the backlight
