DIY ring and pinion swap and LSD Q's.

There's been alot of buzz about R&P swaps lately and I'm jumping on the bandwagon.

I've got a 4.77 ring and pinion. It's in the whole third member from a small axel pre 84 car. I want to put that R&P in my 84 GSL-SE.

I've got a couple questions.

1. Should I do this swap myself? (I am easily frustrated) I've never really messed with a diff before. There is a Mustang shop here in town that obviously does alot of gear work and I've thought about trying to get them to swap mine.

If you've done this yourself, how hard was it and what is the risk of future problems due to improper instalation?

2. While It is all apart, should I do anything to my stock SE lsd (with 140k on it)?
These I've also never messed with before. Are they very complicated? Is it customary to rebuild them from time to time or just buy a new one?

If I buy a new one, Where do I get it? and ~ how much should it cost?

If I rebuild it. Is there a kit available? and where do I get it?

From the limited amount of time I've driven the car the lsd seems to work fine. But it does have some miles on it.

Thanks,

--Alex

Bah!

I'd rather spend $200 than two days ******* with it if that's what it comes down to.

Looks like someone needs to get a diff and tear it down with pics for all of us to see.

Do it yourself and save money. I just pulled the 3rd member on one of mine to see if it was okay and it was a lot easier than I thought. If you swap the R & P the tolerances are what you need be concerned with the most.

I havent done ring and pinion swap. But since I took apart the extra non-LSD 3rd member, I may as well learn.

I don't have issues swapping a third member. I might have issues dissmanteling and reasembling one.

Thanks ^^ for all responses so far.

Sorry, I haven't swapped gears before. Just the whole pumpkin.

Need to be careful and setup the r&p and LSD just right, otherwise it'll chew itself up in no time flat. And ruin your parts.

I'd take it to a professional driveline shop, have it done right and forget about it. They usually warrenty their work too.

If ambitious, you can buy the mazda factory differential book and spend several hours trying to get it right. It requres some nice tools too.

Best of luck,
Brad

You can swap the R&P yourself, just take it to a competent shop to set it all up. There are very specific tolerances you have to setup in a diff and unless you have precision measuring equipment and a lot of patience, you need a shop to do it. Just take the assembled pumpkin and all the new parts, including the new R&P you want installed and they can do it for you. If this isn't set up right, the rear end is going to wear out real fast and whine like crazy.

feeler gauges! thats all we use at school when we do rear end work.....not to hard really, at least i dont remeber it being hard. But if ya dont have a clue as to what ur doing, just take it to the shop.

Or, pull the pumpkin out, and take both there and be like yah....put this one in here, and make work:S.....
