DIY porting
Pretty soon I'm pulling my motor and rebuilding it, and the plan was to also street port it while the engine was in peices. Originally I was going to send the side and rotor housings out so the sides can be lapped and both ported, but I was wondering if I could get away with just buying the templates and doing it myself. It can't be that hard, buy a bunch of carbide dremel tips and follow the templates, thats all there is to a $400+ streetport right? Any body have any thoughts?
BTW heres the diy porting faq I found on mazda trix

There's more to it then just following the templates. The trick is in shaping and finishing the runners and knowing the little tricks like bevelling the exhaust ports and paying attention to the closing edge of the intake port to protect the side seals.
Go to www.nopistons.com and search the engine building sections. There's plenty of good info there.

Yep, do what he said. There are plenty of people doing it for the first time, and I think that mostly they come out okay. So if you consider yourself to be "above average" then you probably won't have too hard a time. Lots of research, and look at all of the hundreds of photos available at nopistons. You'll get the idea...
