Distributor and timing question

So i got my car back on the road. yey! It runs much better with a clean fuel line. after we got it idling we checked the ignition timing. its never fired right since ive had it. but now i know a little more about it, so now i know what to ask. Here's my question.

The leading fires on time, but the trailing will somtimes not fire, and the leading will fire insted when the trailing is suppose to. CrazyJoe12a, suggested to take the dis. cap off and spray out the distributor with electronic engine cleaner, we tried that, and it was dirty enough that i sanded some of the rust off of the inside of the distributor. but the problem pursists. It was mentioned to me that it might be my ignitors jumping sparks. Does anyone have any other suggestions? By the way, i have a new dis. cap, spark plugs, and double silicon cables.

Thanks everyone for all your help. someone always gives me an anwser.

Shawn

Do you have a '79 or '80? The emissions controls shut the trailing ignition off at certain times, in order to keep the thermal reactor fed with unburned HC's.

ok, just a hunch, sometimes they pay off and sometimes theyre dead wrong

Try and see if you can separate the plug leads from the coils to the dizzy cap, and make sure they only cross at 90 degree angles. There might be a crossfire issue with them. Just because new leads are new doesn't mean they are any good.
