Distance From Your Steering Wheel?

From a Level 1 Trauma Center: Sit as far back as you can w/ air bags. SCCA says your wrist should meet the top of the steering wheel (for autocross anyway). I stay about an inch back from wrist to top in most of my cars. You?

I have my wrist meet the top of the steering wheel. In a relaxed feel.

I don't have airbags, but my seat is back all the way because I'm 6'2" and better than 275.

I drive with one hand or a knee, because I gotta smoke and drink coffee and talk on the cell phone with the other one.

I sit in a position were I can rest my elbow on the top of the door panel and allow my fingers to hold the steering wheel at 9 o'clock.

I'm 6'2" but only 150 lbs; so, I have to move the seat up quite a bit if I want my skinny legs to control the steering wheel. Therefore, I stick with the "one arm on the door panel, the other on the arm rest" position.

I think that if I were to stretch my arms over the steering wheel, my forearm would touch 12 o'clock at about 2 or 3 inches behind my wrist.

I drive in comfort; if I need to drive more spiritedly, with my arms at 3 and 9, the angle the inside of my elbows would make would probably create would be around 140*. That way, I still have great control, and I don't have my arms out stretched.

Actually, they don't tell you but 10\2 or 9\3 positions are not "correct" for driving cars with airbags. You should hold the wheel at 4 and 8, and never cross your arms when you turn. The idea is if it goes off, you won't break your arms, or have them come back at your face.

4 and 8 and never cross your arms ? 4 and 8 with palms up or down ? You ain't originally from frisco are you ? Hell, I'd mount a damn handicap steering ball at 6 o'clock and disable the air bags before I'd grab it like that. Like just come on out of the closet, then.
