distance between front tow hooks?

Does anyone know? or could somebody please measure? I am going to pick up my first rx7 (yea!) with a tow bar, and I need to know how wide it needs to be.

Thanks

mike

Not a good idea. The tow hooks are for pulling the car out of a ditch and tieing it down on a trailer, they do not have the lateral support and strength required of a tow bar.

Get yourself a trailer or tow dolly.

Take a big hammer with you. Half of the ones I have seen the tow hooks are bent to the side.

If you want to do it safely, get a tow dolly or trailer. The tow hooks won't cut it for any distance, other than around town. If that's the case, I use a tow strap, only if the towed car has working brakes.

I can't believe anyone would seriously encourage you to use a tow bar. Get a clue gentlemen.

There is nothing wrong with a tow bar that is properly attached and reinforced. Just attaching something to the tow hooks is not a good idea.

It wouldn't cost too much to rent a dolly from uhaul to get the job done.

I agree with that. I towed my 65 Barracuda with a tow bar, after I removed the bumper and bolted the tow bar directly to the frame. However, the way the 1st gens are set-up, it would be more work than it's worth, to me, to remove everything that is needed to bolt to the frame. What there is there to bolt to, I wouldn't trust for long at all.

When I pulled the Barracuda, I was using a 76 Chevy 3/4 ton 4x4. Almost missed an entrance ramp to the interstate at 55 mph, jammed the brakes and turned. The tow bar held, but the rear of the pickup started to break loose. Not a comfortable feeling. I have doubts that a 1st gen would have held up in the same situation, even if it was bolted to the frame horns.
