disposing of old wiring

i have a lot of wires left over from the rats nest removal, and ones not in use from the new carb. can i just cut them? and cap them or something so they dont cross?

or is better to open the harness? i know nothing of electronics. at all.

thanks,
Nick

if you never plan to return the car to stock than hack away. Just be absolutely POSITIVE that everything you still need is properly hooked up! I missed a 2 way plug on the back of my alt when I hacked mine up. It does make for a much cleaner appearance under the hood.
Also only cut one wire at a time so you dont accidentally short anything out.

ok. the car is an 81. i cant read a wiring diagram to save my life. im fairly certain the Emission control unit is kinda under the driver strut and a bit closer to the firewall. as far as i can work out, i still need the #1 and 2 water temp sensors, and whatever one is connected to the alternator. i followed everything else back and it all terminates at the ECU

You are more professional than I am! I just lopped of the connectors and taped it all up and called it a day.

Get a friend and hope they know how to read a wiring diagram. The manual shows how to depin the wires at the main connecting plug before the harness goes through the firewall to the ecu. By depinning you can always pin your mistakes back in.

too late. i left the two water sensors, the oil pressure, and the one connected to the alternator. everything else was cut right at the ECU. there is enough wire left to able to identify it. i have everything i cut. but yeah, hopefully i didnt mess up

im gonna tape it all up and get a case thing tomorrow.

so, i almost shat myself.

end of the day, i connect the battery, climb in. turn the key, only one dash light comes on. odd....i try to roll up the windows. nothing. at this point im freaking out. i do not deal with electronics at all. i hate them.

so im cursing as loud as i can, i climb out, take a look at all the damage i had done. then noticed that i disconnected the ECU harness to make it easier to get to the wires. plugged it in and everything went back to normal. HUGE sigh of relief.

anyway, thanks for the help everyone. just have to solder one connection i did break, and tie it all up tomorrow

Hey since you just went through all this work could you take a quick look under your hood and tell me what color wires go to the plug in the back of the alt? Cursing my friend who hooked up the wrong plug and cut the original off...

Cut in haste, shat yourself at leisure, heh.

This isn't even really electronics... basic electrical, about as mysterious as plumbing. Electrons all flow uphill.

the fruits of my labor

and the new carb but i think the wiring came out nice. its much neater under the hood. the next time i get not lazy ill de-pin the cut wires in the ECU.

eviljay these last two are for you. two black and white wires go to the connection at the alternator

these connect to the top and bottom, farthest RIGHT ECU connections. the farthest LEFT in this picture

hope that helps.
