Direct injection

Would it be possible to mount a pair of injectors from one of the new cars with direct injection using the trailing spark plug holes?
A sequntial injection controller would be needed so the would enter at the right time for each lobe of the rotor.
A good hot ignition may also be needed since you would only have the leading plugs.
There should be some increase in fuel efficiency if not power. Maybe some emmissions reduction as well.
Any thoughts?

I do not know why mazda did not go with a direct injection system with the renesis (or earlier even). Direct injection is excellent for fuel economy and is even better (and safer) for boosted engines. I know it is not rotary but the new audi turbo and non turbo quattros are direct injected. I do not think it would be hard to implement. I would actually be really interested if direct injection had been done on a rotary with an injector instead of a spark plug in the trailing spot. I would imagine that for ideal performace and effectiveness maybe a direct injected rotary would need an injector a little above where the trailing plug is (maybe that way trailing ignition could still be maintained?
Well that's just my .02 I am sure that Mazda may have tinkered with a direct injected design but for some reason or another did not use it.

Mazda is the first company to use direct injection for gas engines. But Direct injection has been used for ages on Deisels. Maybe It would be worth while to look into deisel direct injection.

With a MAXIMUM of 10:1 compression on a rotary, diesel will not work.

There were experimental direct injection rotaries in the past.No reason to believe they wont be around in the future, although I doubt it's feasbile to retrofit the system to an old style rotary. If it were that simple, youd think Mazda would have done it already.....

Mazda will have to go to DISC for its next rotary iteration for it to be viable from a fuel consumption basis given the advancements of piston engines as of late. I was wondering, since the combustion chamber in a rotary is less efficient than a piston's given its shape and movement, would DI have a incrementally bigger impact on economy for a rotary? Piston engines with port injection have gotten pretty damn efficient already, DI helps but real world its like 10-15% more fuel efficient. Would DI finally even the playing field as far as fuel consumption for a rotary?

It seems to me the only issues are cost and dealing with the emissions issues of lean burn. It seems other engines have gotten around this.

I would think an all aluminum, DISC engine with an electric water pump would be pretty damn efficient.
