get a can of degreaser, gunk or whatever brand, follow the directions and then hose it off. Then get a can of tire cleaner, armor all, stp whatever and then spray the hell out of everything. check out the www link and look at the rx7 pictures, I did this and the engine and bay look like new.
The Engen Compartment clean up is going to be one of my ongoing projects. I want to get the big chunks off and then spend the winter modding and cleaning and get it set up proper.
Don't forget to cover the electrical components. Battery, Dizzy, and the like befor you hose them off.
Good Luck

Try a product by the POR15 company called "Marine Clean".. stuff is non-toxic (gee, I still have eyes and skin on my hands, so it can't be TOO bad) and yet it strips grease, oil, whatever like acid.. this is the only stuff I'll use when it comes to things like brake dust or oily and greasy parts under the car. Honestly, GUNK comes close in effectivness on the engine, but Marine Clean is an all around product that can be used to clean damn near anything...

I used a heavy duty degreaser and undercoating remover to get thing clean. Then I used tire dressing and polish to bring out the shine. I spent a day on my engine bay. I had quite a job to do because the previous owner had the car undercoated so the engine bay was full of a black tar type of thick coating
Here is the result

To clean the engine bay:
1) Lots of rags
2) Lots of time
3) Degreaser
4) Sand paper
5) Pressure washer (for the years of leaked power steering fluid and oil)
6) Lots more time
7) SHITLOADS of elbow grease
end result: A blown engine that looks really really nice:

What do you do, rub the hits of acid on the grease spots, then drop them for full effect?

go to your local detail shop and ask to buy soem of their acid they use on rims, it works great on all kinds of metal, just not polished or chrome.

1) Drown everything in WD-40
2) Let sit 24 hours
3) Pressure Clean
4) Drown Everything in Degreaser
5) Let sit 1-2 hours
6) Pressure clean everything again.
That will remove about 90% of the crap.
The rest will require some brushes. I have also drowned everything in Armor all overnight, and it leaves everything beautiful, but you need to have a relatively clean engine to start with.

Previous owner sprayed mine with tar too, what a bitch. I have never seen undercoating remover, where can i get it and who makes it. Other wise I was thinking of having it steamed.

we also used karosine on your car paint to remove overspray, this can also be used to just remove it.
