Darn engine fuse keeps burning out!

The engine fuse on my 85 SE will burn out as soon as I turn the ignition to the "on" position. In the past, that fuse would burn out every now and then when the engine was running and I thought there was a short in the wire going to the BAC/ASV. At that time I disconnected the wire and I did not have any problems for 3 months. Now as soon as I turn the key, poof!!! Ground is OK and besides I have an additional ground wire from the -ve of the battery terminal. I found the wires going to the back of the alt had insulation peeling off near the connector so thinking that was it, I unplugged the connector but still blew the fuse. Where else should I look next????? Somebody help!!!

If the insulation on the wire is messed up, unplugging it will only tell you that it wasnt the device that the plug was pluged into

Dunno a lot about -Se's wiring, cuz i never had one, but i do know the engine fuse on the 12A models goes to quite a bit of stuff, leading and trailing coils, distr. carb heater etc. i beleive its black/yellow. ?

Id get a wiring schematic and start tracking it down, if its really getting hot then its pulling a lot of current through it. If it pops it as fast as you put the ignition switch on its a dead short to ground...

Oh and the 2 wires in that alt plug are 'field' and 'stator' wires..
