damn damn damn!!

Well after 3 week of rain here in south georgia, it finally happened. I sunk my car to the frame in my front yard. It was late and I couldnt fool with it because it was raining and I hurt my back over the weekend. Yesterday it finally stoppped raining so my friend came over and pulled it out, got it to a safe piece of ground and left it. got in this morning to go to work and the damn thing wont fire up, wont even catch. I popped the hood and pulled the leading plugs thinking that the car was flooded but the plugs wernt wet. so I started looking around the engine bay and low and behold there is coolent filling the spot near the intake (got the gasket and freeze plugs on there way. I havnt had a chance to do any thing else but I noticed there is grit on the inside of the carb hat, one of the filter element seals came loose and the car has been sucking sand and grit into the carb (has been less then 2 mos and 2500 mile since I had a chance to pop it open). I am going to order the rebuilt kit and start prematurely on my street ported motor. I just thought I would share my week with everyone, sorry for the length.

Peace

Wait, so your saying you have coolant by your intake so your going to rebuild? I would check the o-rings first.

No, I got sand in the motor from the seals in the carb breather hat giving out. Im going to block the coolant passages this weekend and a few other things Ive been needing to do, change oil, filters, fix the breather, adjust the carb, adjust the timming, replace all of the rubber fuel lines, etc. I am afraid that the sand may have messed up the apex seals and rotor housings. I planned on porting and rebuilding a streetported motor this summer because my motor has over 200k miles on it.

Damn, Damon, that sucks the big one.

Sand is an engine killer - I dimly recall reading in a car magazine in the '80s about the Mazda factory racing team losing all their motors at the Daytona endurance race, due to hi-flo filters that let the wind-blown sand in.

Yea but I will finally get the street port and a motor with less then 200k miles on it so it will be a sad story with a happy ending.

If you want to try and save it take the carb off and clean/rebuild it. Take exhaust manifold off. Then pour gobs and gobs of MMO down the intake manifold and spin the motor by hand, watch the sand and MMO come out the exhaust ports. Keep doing this until you think it's all out.

I'd prolly then pour gas down the intake manifold and hand crank motor, in order to get all the MMO and any sand residue out of there. Hope for the best and start it.

The sand has gathered in there since the last time I popped the cover off the carb not all at once there is not much but the compression is poor about 50 one the #1 and 55 on the #2. Im going to do some work on it this weekend and see if I can get it running this weekend (if it does not rain). I will keep everyone informed on the status.

PS ty for the input df7

damn damon, you trying to buggy your 7. sorry to here.

on the mention of sand and motors, porsche's 2000 entry into the daytona 24 was there first water cooled 911's. unfortunately they for got to rinse the blocks well after sandcasting and they were dropping like flies as the sand killed the water pumps.

No jeremy, not buggying, bogging the mud came up over the rear bumper. I hope it does not rain this weekend so I can do another compression test and see if it is still holding at 50 -55 because I got a bunch or goodies for it today (msd blaster2 coils, new fuel line, mmo for the gas and oil, 20mm freeze plugs for the intake passages, new Mazda oem thermostat, water wetter for the radiator, oil, filters, and much more).

Jeremy, still enjoying your gen2 or are you ready to come back to us? j/k

2nd gen is a far better everyday car in my opinion. but i really miss my 79. james had the lower oil line spring a big leak on it. luckily he got it shut off and no damage occured. as soon as its fixed i'm going to see if i can borrow it for a bit. after driving it last time with its nice taut suspension, my fc felt like a sedan. unfortunately my ferret just cost me the money for my springs at the vet. little **** needs to be on my insurance. this weekend is new struts install weekend. i'll finally stop bobbing and basketball bouncing the front wheels. i'll tell you, its really odd the difference in road noise driving jen's se then my fc. i think majority of the weight in the fc is sound deadening.

Well, I got her running again. three thing broke at the same time. The coolant passages in the intake went out (fixed them with 2 20mm freeze plugs) the leading coil burned out (replaced with msd blaster 2 coil, and damn she runs good now) and the thermostat was totally crusted over with calcium deposits. She is once again running strong and still awaiting the streetport but that will now have to wait beings I got **** canned at my job today.

Peace
