I have a 1984 GSL 12A that started right up this past Sunday, then immediately died after about 30 seconds like it ran out of gas. I pulled the plugs and they were black. I put a new set in and it started right up (it wasnt flooded) It ran fine till this afternoon when it did the same thing again. Starts right up and dies after 30 seconds. If I put fuel in the carb it would start then die right away again, so it seems to be getting spark. The plugs did have some carbon on them though. Could this be a fuel filter problem? Any ideas would be appreciated. thanks.

 

Yeah start with the easy, cheaper things first. It does sound like the fuel filter is bad though.

 

The next time this happens, unplug one of your spark plug wires and plug in an old pulg. Ground the threads to the block or fender wall. Have someone turn the car over. If you see spark then its fuel/carb problem. If you see no spark, then you have a bad ignitor probably.
