Damn 1st gens are good snow cars!

I swear that my 83 in the snow is better than most FWD cars out there. We had a foot of snow here last night, and I had a rush hour commute the next morning. I was actually blowing past people that were in fancy SUV's and were stuck or slipping all over. I feel I have way more control over where my car goes, and all I have to do is accelerate a bit, and the car automatically goes around corners.. And let's not forget the parking lot factor!!

Me too, my first gen is great in the snow, never have any real traction problems, and it still feels very stable in a few inches of snow. Great control around corners, if I start to slip, it's very easy to just turn it quickly into a drift and slide nicely around the corner. It matters A LOT on your tires though. First snow I still had my Yoko AVS es100's on(GREAT summer tires), the car would just plain not move in 5'' of snow with these tires on. They might as well have been slicks. Both rear tires were sitting on top of 5'' of snow, I let out the clutch, got out of my car, and watched the tires spin, my car didn't even move at all. So I took off my nice wheels, and put the stock plus wheels w/ winter tires on my car, and it does great in the snow.

Haha yeah...

I'm only a couple minutes away from you, in Burnsville, and I drive my car every day up here as well.

I was shocked on how well the car made it through the ice and snow.

I though the RWD would have done me in for sure.....but nope!

Such a simple car......but so much more control.

I can't agree more. In the snow, I've driven a Camry, Accord, 626, Volvo XC (AWD), Grand Cherokee, Integra, MR2 Turbo and none of these can tell you what the car's doing like an Rx-7. With snow tires, the only thing that can slow this little car down is DEEP snow where it basically becomes a plow. You NEED to know what the car is doing and is about to do when you're in a low traction situation and nothing I've driven can provide this like the 1st gen car. Of course, the fact that it's slightly underpowered doesn't hurt either.

Talking

I agree completely. With a RWD, as long as you know what you're doing, tail-slide is far more controlable IMO.

SUV drivers seem to think that AWD makes them invincible, but they're always firstin the ditch...

The key is the winter tires. With all-seasons my car can become rather uncontrollable . I agree about the ease of turning though, it's eay to drift around corners in a controlled fashion with our cars.

Yeah, tires make a huge difference. Right now I've got some summer tires on and it snowed and iced last night....was an interesting ride.

First gens are definitely awesome in the snow. I learned to drive in the white stuff on a '94 Voyager, and '93 Taurus, both FWD. Even though my 7 has a smaller percentage of its weight over the driving wheels, it gets bettern traction than either of them, and is hugely more controllable. There's a slight offset in my street (the one running top-bottom) a block or so from my house that looks like this:

Every day on my way home from school, I like to do a drift around the entire thing. It kicks ***!

I'e said it before and I'll second my original motion.. very few vehicles are safer in the snow than these cars, if you know what you're doing. The tires on my S are summer-only.. have yet to have a problem going anywhere. I live at the base of the tallest ski-able mountain in Pennsylvania, so, it snows quite a bit here. Nothing more entertaining than doing a donut and then keep on climbing in front of a tourist whose SUV is stuck in a ditch...
