cut secondary spring

alright I think I may have done something really stupid....I read a few days ago that if you cut the spring for the secondarys down a little bit they would kick in earlier. well........I cut about an 1/8 of an inch off the spring, and now my car sounds really rough at idle.... and when I poped the hood the carb was making a loud buzzing noise....any way.....I was wondering if anyone could tell me what to do in order to fix this. I think the secondarys may be stuck open.

You probably didn't reconnect something when you had the air cleaner off maybe? Cuting the spring will NOT cause that.

alright ........I figured it out... when I bought my car one of the hoses running from the blue air box thing was capped off....it was a bigger hose on the drivers side of the carb....but yeah I must have re-installed it when I put the blue thing on.....anyway I capped it off again and now it's running fine......
thanks tho.

I didn't notice much of a difference running 1/4 spring until I swapped it out for 3/4 spring and went for a drive. I flored and was like waiting...waiting...waiting... ahh there we go a little power. Now I'm on mechanical secondaries, WORLD OF DIFFERENCE, full go by 3500 RPM. None of this waiting til 6K for power BS. Oh yeah, best part.... it's free.

I found with other people I've helped, that mechanical secondaries work best with headers. One worked well with out the header, but the other didn't? So I'm guessing something was wrong with his car. I'd rather go to mechanical then go the reduced spring or no spring route because its pretty garonteed the secondaries will open when you want them to.

My money is on doing Sterling's mechanical secondaries mod. That way you are in total control of how the secondaries are open at all times!

Search for "Carb crap" I think in the archive and you'll find it.

I was going to do it myself until I found that the friend I got my '83 off had already converted to secondaries.
