I did it years ago in a 73 Datsun pickup, it's not that hard. My widebody has an after market sunroof in it, but they never reinstalled the headliner, that is the hardest part of the install to get right.
Would I do it myself on a non-sunroof car, no. I would almost prefer to have the rear 1/4 glass to be able to pop open.

mines cut in. bought it that way from guy who bought it that way.. the guy drilled a hole i nthe wrong spot first, so i have a hole in the top of my car, the damn thing wont stay close all the way unless im going under 45, then the seal pops slightly and gives an annoying whirring noise. its in such a way that taking it out would cause the roof to basically collapse in on itself. oh, and the hole leaks into my headliner, its quite unpleasant.

the best way to do it would be to cut the roof off a sunroof equipped 1st gen and ask a BODY SHOP or qualified BODY MAGICIAN to do it for you... i cut in a sunroof once, sealed it with rtv and it worked great (dont worry, not on an FB), but the headliner looked like ***.
sunroofs tend to let in too much sun anyways, which always seems to burn my sensitive skin.. figuring out a way to dump air from the rear of the vehicle will retain the chassis rigidity and give you nice ventilation

It has been done. But I dont remember which direction it went. The car was the AUS one that Had FD Front Brakes and wheels. There were pics of the process on the web a year or two ago. It was a very very nice car.
I can Sale you a Cutout with the panel if you want.
I will be in NC over thanks giving if you wanted to come pick it up.

I would highly reccomend you DON'T do this. I work on interior water leaks, and new cars that come in with aftermarket roofs installed, even the fancy power ones, that are out of adjustment, or leak, or whatever, I can't fix for the following:
1.) Every aftermarket roof I have seen has no glass adjustment for raising or lowering the glass level and making it fit flush, and helping it seal.
2.) Most, if not all aftermarket roofs have no drains, so, if that thing leaks, the water is coming in, or going in your roof and making rust.
3.) If you break something on one these things, say an arm or some other do-dad, most of these companies don't sell parts, aren't in business long enough to replace the roof, and the places that install them will service them, but if they are really messed up, your buying a new sunroof unit.
Your best bet is what Sparkien suggested. Find a sunroof equipped FB, and gank all the stuff you can, or cut the roof section off and have a body shop install it. If you take into consderation all the possible problems you may encounter, and the initial cost of a higher end aftermarket unit, it will probaby be as much, or less to have an actual FB unit installed. Personally I don't like a sunroof, and will give you the lame excuse that having one will decrease structural integrity, hehe.
Anywho, if you choose to go with a sunroof, please use a factory unit, and make sure the drains are correctly run or else your gonna have to start stocking your storage bins with goldfish....
