custom fuel pump harness

hey guys,

i just finished my dellorto dhla 48 side draft conversion to my 6 port 13b.i found a thread somewhere a couple days ago about how to run a custom fuel pump harness for my new low pressure fuel pump but cannot for the life of me find it again.i remember it saying to use a 4 prong fog light style relay which i have picked up but just can't find the thread.i've been searching for about 2days now and just can't find it.if anyone can point me in the right direction it would be muchly appreciated.the car is a 88 fc gxl but i figured since it was a carb style question i would post it here.or should i use my factory fuel pumppower wire and jut attach it to the new low pressure pump?thanks in advance.......

interesting how some ppl insist on using relays for a fuel pump. i don't and never have had a single problem, using the stock wiring. all u need is a switched 12v and a ground. some pumps ground themselves thru it's mounting and some have a separate ground wire. more wiring is involved with relays. but it's ur car. usually the package the relay comes in has the diagram on it that tells what terminals r what. probably can find something online as well.

pretty straight forward.... run a new power wire from the battery, and connect to Pin 30, ground pin 85... connect pin 87 to your original fuelpump positive and use it to switch the relay... then just ground the negative side of the fuel pump. here's a link to good info on wiring a relay up.

running a relay is a good way to make sure you're getting full power to your pump... older wiring can create resistance... along with the fact that if the current is going through a 20 plus year old switch, any oxidation on the contacts will cause more resistance.

I did a relay on my car and installed it in the bin area. I also added a shutoff switch at the same time. I installed it just like 81WideMariah did.

awesome thanks guys.muchly appreciated.question,so if i use the switched power to ignition then does that mean that the wholetime my key is on the on position that my fuel pump will be running even if the engine is off just dumping fuel into the carb or can it not dump into the carb if the engine is off? that wouldnt make since though. so i can't just leave the key in the on position then, right? or should i run it to a toggle switch which can then also be used for fuel cut off? i thought i had everything figured out before i planed the swap but i guess i over looked these scenarios. sorry for sounding like a newb right now,but i've been toying with my 7 for over 5 years now.always wanted to do a side draft conversion and finaly got a hook up when i had the money.

I would still run a switch to the pump. Especially when running a carburetor. the Carb shouldn't flood if properly setup with the floats. But, if it is clogged they can flood. (Used to happen to my blow-through once in a while.) By having the switch, I was able to run the car until the bowl dried out.

I run my carter fuel pump with a relay from the stock fuel pump, to a deadheaded Weber. Never
had any problems with it. Even had the stock Nikki deadheaded.
