Custom bass box?

Hi guys, I remember seeing somewhere about makng a subwoofer box out of "fiberglass moldings"? I was wondering if this is possible, on my 83 rex, use the two compartments behind the driver and passenger and put fiberglass molding inside and mount a sub in each of them? If this can work, it would totally kick *** and look super sweeeeeet with an amp in the middle. Waddayasay?

Of course it would work, its all about how much time you have to spend on it. Fiberglass is a pain in the *** to work with. It takes a lot of time and effort to get something made right and to sand it down and paint it, etc. I guess in the end it depends on what you are shooting for. I for one would never put heavy stereo equipment in my car.

2 subs are not heavy...what are you talking about?????? Adys, thank you VERY much, that will help me greatly when I start to build the sub enclosures. With the compartment not too big, will there be enough room for the bass to produce good sound?

TwinTurbo is right - these aren't Honda Accords, a little bit of weight makes a significant difference. You'll certainly feel the effect. That said, it's all about what your personal intentions are for the car - those of us who are addicted enough to speed and handling care not for compromise lol.

yea these cars slow down a lot with added weight... if you want to get rid of some other stff to make up for your stereo check this thread out lighter is better like the spare tire if yoy use that space for yer sub when you remove tire jack tools etc. it will probably ballance out the weight right there.

hey thanks sammy
its a pretty common way of building a box and keeping some room in the hatch, just not common in RX-7's...

it sounds no different to a wooden box of the same size.
it was a nice tight sound, still quite loud though..

May be common but, I'm not much into audio stuff. I like that Idea though. I'll have to try that when I need a new project. WOuld be nice to a have a neat removable box for that space.

Thanks for the inspiration!

Hey, i read a write up that someone made a box that the covered the floor kinda like a flase floor and kept the subs look'n incognito and still had room. Unless you use the storage bins I would mount subs there, you can fit up to like 12" subs there. The ideal sub setup is a box facing backwards toward the hatch, about 10-12" from the hatch. It pounds the best but wastes a LOT of room.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, if you build a box out of wood, get some fiberglass resisn and seal the inside of the box, it works wonders and isn't that hard to do. What subs/amps/head unit and amp wire you got?

Looking for write up on wooden sub box

I have been going through the threads trying to locate a writeup I seen on the wooden box config for FC's but I 'can't seem to find it. Anyone out there know which one it is?

Thanks

This won't help you figure out what your going to build your box out of but it'll help you make sure everything is going to sound good, it has a couple of box making calculators that are helpful.
