Cp rack and pinion opinion again

IT looks cool... but is it worth it? I would get it in an instant if it had power steering option... has anyone bought it and installed it in???

I placed my order a week ago, but it still hasn't shipped yet... has anyone else ordered one yet and if so, how long did it take to get it? I ordered the stage 2 kit.

There's no doubt that the kit is a quality unit, as CP racing and JDuncan spent quite a long time testing and developing it. I don't really think that the kit is necessary myself, when the steering box that is on our cars can be adjusted and most of the slop removed. The ratio on the rack isn't that much tighter than the SE box anyways, IIRC.

you can get a GTI rack and it will shorten the ratio.

I adjusted mine in May of this year - slop has not come back. Do it right and you will have good results - at least I did. If your's is just plain worn out, that's a different matter.

My steering box is fine, it's got about 1" of travel at center. I bought the rack kit for steering feel and the quicker ratio.

Now at 3 weeks and waiting for shipment.

How did you get the worm shaft locking nut loose? Did you remove the column from the car, use a chisel, or what? I can't get a good angle on mine from above and from below I can't get enough force to dislodge it. If you used a chisel, did you get it off with one blow or with many?

If the slop comes back, you either didn't tighten the lock nut good enough OORRRR.....you tightened the play in the box too much and you've effectively killed the box,,,,she'll ne'er be tight again, Cap'n!!...

The rod that my steering wheel goes onto somehow is able to come out and in causing unsafe repercussions i believe. It all happened when i was installing my other steering wheel and the rod just pushed in and i could barely get my steering wheel on. When i did get it on i pulled back and the steering wheel came out again 2 " too far this time. Does anyone else have this problem? Is there a fix or does the CP rack and pinion kit replace this mess?

What I did was chisel at 90 degrees to first get a good notch and the a couple of good whacks counter clockwise to loosen it.

ZachstylezRX7 Someone correct me If I am wrong but
the steering wheel is designed to break loose in an accident. I think there is a small plastic retainer clip
some where on the steering shaft or box. I have heard
of this happening before. I think you can just use
a cotter pin to fix it

I don't recommend a chisel for hammering it off (I've seen guys cut the nut right off doing that). I did use a chisel to cut a small notch in the lock nut and then used a large punch (in the notch) to loosen the nut. When resetting the preload, do it in very small degrees or you will over tighten and the box will wear quick. This job requires a lot of pateince - small adjustments, test drive, adjust again - and so on

Bouis - I PM'ed you
