Cost to charge to swap a 12A

Hey guys I got a guy that dropped off an 85 Rx-7 12A GS over here and a remanu Mazda motor. Get this **** Lee at the Mazda dealer referred him to me. Said he knows more about the ways of the rotary than I do.

Well my question is what do I charge him to swap it?

The dealers price is 10-11 hours @ $55/hr!!!! thats what $550-$600 + parts ? Well anyways I want to do it for him, but dont want to rape a fellow rotary driver, you guys know me

I told him maybe $300 or so? Sound cheap , expensive? He has the engine change over kit, new clutch, PP, throw out, oil, coolant, filters etc.

Im probally gonna jerk the old one out today, and swap everything over on the pallet. Might swap the next one in tonite... Last time i did this it took me 6 hours (5 years ago), wonder how I fair now im old and fat?

Advice on price?

Ok motor is out, all parts are swapped, gonna go back out and drop it in. This car has been sitting for about 6 months So hopefully, the carb and **** is fine... Just sent the dude after a dist cap, rotor button, plugs and plug wires

Everything is going pretty smooth... So far, update later...

He is excited as hell! Wish I could share the same enthusiasm with my car

$300 for a motor swap is a bit low if you ask me, but hey, you're helping out a fellow rotorhead.

Yea, $300 is a bit low, I would have charged more but then I'm a jerk like that
Hey Mike, hang in there, just think of how cool it'll be when it's done. and get that "should have did an LT1" **** off your name, it should read "glad I stuck with a rotary" or something like that Peace dude

$300 I think is a little low, I charge $400-$500 depending on how dirty the motor is and how much cleaning I am going to be putting into the engine bay. (ie OIL LEAK AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!)

I'm a mechanic at a dealership. When I do side work I charge $30/hr. It's better than the $80/hr that my dealership gets. I always look up the time for the job in the chilton book. If it pays 10 hours like you said then I think your price is fair. I always tell them that on something like an engine job you might have unexpected things come up that need to be fixed. Like hoses, broken bolts ect. Some of these will not cost any more labor just price of parts(like hoses), some, I will have to charge more labor( like if I have to fix a broken stud).

Good luck,
Mike

OK guys sorry I didnt write back last nite... I was pretty tired I did 2 cars after the motor swap...

Well anyways, I started at 9 30 am, and was done at 5. So it was like 7 1/2 hours... Man you know how much I miss a FB? When I drove it, brought back memories...

Well anyways, when I got done we got talking about performance.. So needless to say Emission ****, cats, air pump, acv, and shutter valve all went bye bye...

In the end he gave me $350 for the extra work

Got my firewall painted on my car too, and Ill post pics as soon as my dad brings the digi cam back Looks pretty sweet

well at least he paid $300.00 extra since it was worth it in my opionon,
would of loved to help out but im here back in mi and will be ripping into another rx7 soon enough.

god will punish me for this ruthless mutalation of rx7's for the common benifit of one and only me.

well actually it will benifit us all ,
im just making al of our rx7's more rare so hang on to em if you got em,

just dont park it in the garage and pretend like its a mint collelectors car cause thats worse,

well my baby's birthday is coming up,
she is turning the big 18,
or maybe she already did i will have to check,

im gonna treat her to an oil change and tune up.
