Cold Startup problems

I have had good success with RX-7's and winter, up til now that is. For the last couple of days my car has been acting up. It's around -20 to -25 Celsius here, and at that temp, I like to warm up my car at least until the needle gets to the first mark before I start to drive. Anyhow, I'll start my car and set the fast idle to around 2k using the choke. Last winter, the car would warm up unattended and then drop down to idle. Everything was fine.

Now the engine will start to run rough and the revs will drop. No amount of throttle will keep it going, and it seems that more throttle actually makes the car run worse. The engine stalls out and will not restart immediately. The really weird part is that I hear a really loud gurgling sound from the gas tank after the engine cuts out. When I turn the key back on and the pump kicks in, the gurgling stops. Anyways the car restarts and acts normally again, but until the engine is thoroughly warmed up, it will lose power again and die. It doesn't seem to matter if the car is sitting still or if I am driving it.

Eventually the problem stops and the car runs fine. There are a couple of other gremlins that have popped up recently and I'm not sure if they're related, so I'll briefly describe them in case one of them is relevant. Firstly, I'm not sure that the flapper in the air cleaner snorkel is opening. I don't have the tube running hot air up to it because I've got the RB header, so I guess the spring that controls it is not heating up enough to let it open. Second I think that there is a weak link in my electrical system somewhere because there seems to be an inordinate drain to the electrical system with my lights on. At one point I could actually hear my fuel pump run faster and slower in time with my hazard blinker. Could my alternator be weak?

I guess that covers it. It's kinda driving me crazy because I'm in the midst of finals and don't have time to mess around with it right now. Next week I'm done classes until Jan, so I have some time to tinker but I don't really have an idea of where to start.

Any and all help is appreciated.

When you hit the throttle, it starts to crap out quicker?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong on my carb theory, but when you hit the throttle, the accelerator pump squirts some gas into the carb, right? If that happened, but the barrels of the carb didn't open up to let air in with it, it would choke it off and die. If you hit the gas too much, it will flood somewhat and not restart right away.

I'm taking a stab in the dark, but it might be worth checking to make sure when you hit the gas, the carb opens properly.
