Cold start problem
I have a 85 SE when I start it cold it revves to 2500 RPM and dies. If I give it gas till it warms up it sits steady at 800RPM. What could be wrong????

Need more information here.
The SE cold start system is pretty complicated, but uses a vacuum switch to adjust the 'secondary throttle' plates to act like a choke. This is run through coolant which comes from the back of the water pump to the Thermowax Pellet to then release the 'choke' effect enacted by the double-diaphragm (Secondary Throttle plates).
When you say that the car starts and revs to 2500, that's about what it should do. When it dies, what does it do? Does it restart immediately? Does it smoke at all (tailpipe)? Does it require a lot of cranking? How much gas do you have to keep on it during cold start, and for how long? Other than this, does it run well? How cold is it where you are?
Reply back and we'll take a shot at it. The cold start system on these cars isn't too complicated to fix, and the SE has some intricacies due to the EFI system. HTH,

I have the same problem, 87 se, it when it finally does start it dies even with throttle, the tailpipes do somke and occasionally there is a backfire while cranking. To start it again requires a LOT of cranking. Thanks for the help
