Unhappy cold air always blows from vents?

what can I do about this? my heater core went out a few weeks ago, and i ordered a new one last week, it should be here tomarrow, but for now my vents always blow cold air (at least while the car is moving) so my question is where are my outside air vents located and is this because they are stuck open? I will have my car torn apart to install the heater core on wed. (and maybe still on thurs) so I might as well trace it down and fix it while I am under there.

thanks all for the help,

Anvar

Sounds like you vents ARE open. One of my vent controls snapped and now it blows cold air whenever I am moving.

Hope that helps!

Just use the recerculation button.

Older cars, and some new ones too, are not power vented. This means that air from outside can flow through the system while the car is moving. This is nice because you can get the car warmed up and then turn the blower off to cut down on electrical load.

If you turn the heat up a bit the cool air flowing through the vents will be heated and feel fine

I don't really think it's a problem with your car, just something most 1st gens do.
Mine does, but it's more bareable on cold days if you leave the vents on DEFROST but turn the fan off. That way the cool air doesn't blow right onto you and your passenger.

I do definately think that it's a problem. My first 1st gen did that and it turned out to be one of the flaps was stuck open with a penny dropped into the vents. My 2nd 1st gen did it, and I never did figure out why - the flaps all moved freely. My 3rd 1st gen doesn't do it, and it'll cook a guy out within 10 degrees below freezing. My advice is just to trace the vent system - you know where it comes in, and where it gets heated, so just make sure everything needed to direct the air to the proper location is working.

I've got to replace my heater core soon too I think. Where did you buy the core? What all did you have to take apart to get the old one out? Did you take the entire dash out?

ok, first I HAVE NO HEATER yet (for those of you telling me to turn the heat on) I shoukd be getting the parts later today or tomarrow, and second I have no recirc button, I have a lever to controll temp, and a lever that has rec - vent - bilevel - heat - defrost,
the only button I have is for AC. so my question still stands, if it is my vents being stuck open, where are they to close them?

What year is your car? If it is pre '84 you can put the lever to max/ac, and air should not enter.

Isn't "rec" re-circulate...?

ANVAR, I can relate. My 85 does the same thing. I have looked into this several times and can't figure out what it causing it. My vents are shut and the flapper doors are working properly. BTW it is about 20 degrees below freezing here.

You're referring to the vents on the side? Yeah, those are obvious. What happens in these is that the center vents above the stereo blow cold when they shouldn't.

Anvar, what did you have to take apart to get the core out?

doing the core now, will let you all know in a while (few days....?) but I think you remove All of the dash to get behind the stereo, this should include all of the dash pads, as well as the center console face and surround, and the instument panel (I think)

ok, I have all of the dash pads removed, and all but one bolt removed, but it is behind the AC condenser and so I guess I have to remove it? what else do I have to remove? do I have to take off the blower box on the left as well? anyone know of any tuts or pics? anything that might help show me how much more hell I have left to go through?

The vents at the ends of the dash are ducted from the cowl in front of the windshield. If you want to plug them for cold weather, you will need to remove the wiper motor for the drivers side.
