Coils going bad after letting them sit?

I was just out there trying to start my car and couldn't really at first ... examined thigns and noticed that my RPM guage didn't move even when cranking as it did before. So my first thought was to check igniters, after those checked out, I took a wire of the leading and placed it close to a ground source to test for spark with no luck, next I tested the trailing and found some there, switched coil pack cable from leading to trailing and vica versa and i've got life but i know that i'm just running on leading right now. Has this happened to anyone before or would know why?

Coils don't fail due to sitting. The only real time they go bad is from losing the oil in them. Usually corrosion causes alot of problems. Did you check the coil tower for corrosion or have you checked the coil wire?

This may be only an old wives tale but some aftermarket coils may have problems sitting on their side the way they do in the 7. Just a thought. I think I read it on here but can't recall the thread.

I have stock ones ... and the "tale" about that is that the fluid covers the coil inside more and helps desipate the heat better if I recall. It would have nothing to do with it just sitting there.
