Clutch wont release
my clutch stays pressed to floor and car stays in gear - my search appears to point to a slave cyl.
Should I replace both slave and master ?
Got a price of a few hundred from mazda for both parts only - special order.
84 gsl-se - 82k - weekend car.

It depends, I had the same problem as well about a week after I bought the car and thought it was due to a torn clutch line and it turned out to be my master cylinder.
1. Get a friend or force someone to help.
2. Have them pump the clutch with there hand pulling it back each time.
3. Look at the slave to see if its even moving or if there is fluid leak around it.
4. If the slave is moving after several pumps but then slowly backs out and there is no fluid leak around it then its the master.
5. If there is fluid leak around the slave, then its the slave.
6. Always good practice to replace both and possibly if you can shell out the extra $15-20 get a stainless braided clutch line from MazdaTrix for some bling.
I also paid like $25-30 for my slave and 60ish for my master but thats because I NEEDED my parts the next day. RockAuto.com has Slaves from $12+ and Masters from $17+ [Wholesale closeout with no warranty]
And by staying in gear do you mean you physically cannot pull the shifter out of gear into neutral?
Hope that helps

Simple answer; 82k miles - replace both.
As above poster stated, get yourself a stainless braided clutch line from Mazdatrix. Don't buy these parts at the stealership, and get yourself a subscription to Victoria British (aka Black Dragon Auto). You'll be saving yourself a lot of money over time.
The reason to do both at once is that once you put in a new slave, the pressure will then start working on the weakest link which is now your master cylinder. Do both at once, you get fresh parts, and won't be fiddling with this another 5-10k miles down the road.
Good luck, enjoy that -SE.

I had the same issue & first replaced slave w/ ss braided line & it worked fine for a while but still had fluid disappearing out of the reservoir. Found the missing fluid under/ behind driver side floor mat & replaced master. Everything is great now.
Unless you are very small & very flexible don't even think about replacing the master w/o first removing the drivers seat.
Good luck.

never buy parts from the dealer unless u just can't get it anywhere else. they can be gotten cheaper other places like autozone, advanced auto, o'rileys, etc. try bleeding the system first to see if it works any better. chances are either the slave or master cyl is leaking, but it's best to replace both if u can.
