Clutch Question

I just bought an 82 Rx-7 GS and need a new clutch. I've noticed that the part numbers for the 79-82 and 83-85 are different. If it is the same engine and trans. wouldn't the 83-85 clutch work? And what do you guys think about the clutchmasters clutch that is always on E-bay? Any other reccomendations on replacement clutches. Keep in mind I'm a poor college student trying to get this car ready for next years AutoX.

By the way, anybody here from KY?

Thanks alot,
Joe

'82 and earlier cars had 215mm clutches and are all interchangeable (except REPU and possibly pre-74 models).

'83 and up N/As had 225mm clutches. (Turbos are 240mm I think)

You can use an '83-up clutch if you use a 225mm flywheel, no problem (as long as it's the right balance! need to check that). The clutch splines are the same so your old tranny will work, no problem.

Thanks

Thanks for the replies. Just one more question, how the hell do you get the flywheel off? Any suggestions from people who've done it? Also what do you mean by "right" balance.

Thanks alot guys,
Joe

The flywheel has a balancer on the other side of the E-shaft (under the front cover) that you'ld need to change as well. If you go aftermarket flywheel from like Rotary Performance (rx7.com) I believe they come with the correct counterweight.

So to get to the counter weight I'd have to remove the back part of the engine? Sorry for all the questions but I'm new to this. Just bought an 82 GS for SCCA SoloII that I'm trying to get "raceable" as my winter project.
