clutch pedal...

So my plates expired in january and i happen to have the luxury of a work van so i parked my rex on feb. 1 and have not drove it since. Anywho my clutch started slipping or about 2 or 3 weeks before that (ie. low rpms in 4 & 5 gear) and now i get in it a week or so ago and the clutch pedal is to the floor and wont come back up. Did the search came up with nothing. My commin sense tells me its the slave cyl. but thought some one could give me some advice on where to start tracking down the real problem before i start just replacing parts. Thanks in advance Peter A. Trapino

o ya 85 gsl 12a bone stock all orginal "as far as i know" 171000 on the clock.

My guess says the slave cylinder, these tend to leak alot especially if you give them the chance. I would start there, its only $30 from victoria british. If that dont remedy it, a new clutch is in order.

Dont rule out you clutch master cylinder either. The MC on my car went out BEFORE the slave cylinder did. If it is one of those two parts that is causing your problem I would suggest replacing both of them at the same time. neither one of them are very expensive. Autozone and Advance carry both cylinders.

However, if your clutch was actually slipping while driving this sounds like the clutch itself needs to be replaced. Usually MC or SC problems are only noticible when trying to shift gears. Slipping of the clutch while driving is usually a worn pressure plate. Based on your description you may need a new clutch and new MC and SC.

Good Luck.

clutch slippage is uaually a worn clutch disc not pressure plate.

The peddle to the floor sure sounds like the hydraulics quit on you. I would try to bleed the system first, then look for leaks. Sometimes the fluid builds up in the rubber boot so it's a little hard to find - I had a leak in the slave cylinder that was small enough to just top off for the last two years, but when I did the clutch a few weeks ago I found the boot on the slave was full of fluid. The slippage was another problem, as noted by others above, you need to do a clutch job. Working with the slave cylinder is a lot easier with the tranny removed while doing the clutch, so you might want to do both jobs at the same time.

I replaced my slave last year, and had to replace it again today. I just ended up replacing both the master and slave cylinders at the same time just to avoid any further downtime. I would change your clutch out too, since you said it was slipping. I'm sure it won't be long before the clutch won't grab at all. I'd say you can get all that for $200-$250.

one other note, when u replace the clutch master and slave cylinders, make sure to flush out all the old fluid, especially if it has a dark color to it.
