Clutch install

Hey gentlemen,

I'm coming into ownership of an 84 GS, buying from another member of the board.

The car in question needs a new clutch.

Is this difficult to accomplish? I'm sort of anxious about it, having only really done bolt-on mods to other cars and minor repairs. I'm willing to take my time and learn it, but I'm looking for some advice or tips.

Also, I don't have jack stands or anything right now - will I need to get under the car?

Yes you will need jackstands, you will also need somthing to drain the tranny fluid into (oil drain pan) this makes the tranny easier to move around. You should pick up a hynes manual for the car, that will help you alot. I'll let others finish the other things you need, such as bearings and what not.

i just put in a new engine and changed the clutch. if you buy like a napa clutch or something, they come with all the bearings you will need so thats not a problem. the only problem i encounted was the pilot bearing, it is a real bitch to get out, there is a tool you can buy to get it out that suposidly makes it a ton easier, but i think its about 115 bucks from mazdatrix. but other than that, the clutch isnt too hard to install, oh yeah it should also come with an alignment tool.

i just did my clutch install as well... the pilot bearing came out with ease after i got a slide hammer from harbor freight (it came with a little adapter thing).
but the things you will absolutely need are: jack, jack stands, good socket set, torque wrench, and some patients.
some of the other tools that could come in handy are: clutch alignment tool, 500lb impact wrench (for the flywheel) and a friend to help you.
if you have any more specific questions, you can pm me as i still have everything remembered for the most part because i did it a week ago

Thanks for the tips so far.

I'm determined to do this thing myself. Also, part of my conditions for buying the car is that I don't spend any money on repairs (I can buy parts, however).

Looks like I can get a clutch kit for under $200, although I'm not even exactly sure it needs all that. The seller told me that it doesn't engage very well right now - does that indicate needing a new clutch?
