clutch inconsistant slipping

when i got my rex 6 months ago the clutch was worn a little but still pretty decent. recently (past month or so) it has been slipping pretty bad but i have put less than 1000 miles on it. mostly i notice the slipping when i release it but i think it is still slipping a little after engaged. it slips every time i drive it but it isnt consistant. sometimes it feels different. because of that it made me think it wasnt the clutch itself. i thought it might be the master or slave cylinder. i have already talked to my buddies at nopistons.com and some said it was the cylinders and some said it couldnt be because the hydraulic system is only used to disengage the clutch. i understand what they are saying but is it possible that something is causing the cylinders to release the clutch slow, and then not release fully after engaged, which would explain the slipping?

How far do you have to push the pedal bfore the clutch releases? If it's right at the top, you may only need to adjust the freeplay.

When clutches begin to fail, they slip. If it was a bad slave or master you probably would grind trying to get it in gear. I doubt it's that. It's most likely the clutch is worn.

When they go, they go. One day it works, the next day it slips. Temp has a lot to do with it. The clutch does recover somewhat after slipping, but the long term is, you can either live with it or replace it. The clutch on my Miata has been bad for three years, but as long as I don't abuse it I can still drive the car.

did you replace the slave or the master cylinder? That is where I would start.

i see what you guys are saying about the cylinders having nothing to do with it slipping but i dont understand how my clutch could go bad so fast. is it possible that something else having to do with the clutch is broken? sometimes i feel vibration when i engage it in 1st gear. ive heard this means the throw out bearing is bad? could something with the clutch internals be bad besides the friction material just being worn? if i didnt have to buy an entire new clutch that would be great cause i am low on cash.

well when i first got the car in february the guys driveway was solid ice and i bruned the clutch alot trying to get it up there, i started in 3rd gear once cause my friend wanted to know what would happen lol, i dunno it just doesnt seem like i couldve killed it that fast. im a decent driver and the majority of the time i drive it without slipping it to much - i dont drive with my foot on the clutch or anything like that.

like i said i think my throw out bearing is bad, could this be causing the slippage when i engage it? the slipping is minimal i think after its engaged.

ok so we have established that it isnt the master or slave cylinder. disregarding the possiblity that the clutch is just worn, is there anything else that could cause this? im no clutch expert but could the diaphram spring crack/warp? also, could a throwout bearing cause it because i think mine is bad - i notice shaking when taking of in first gear sometimes.

The bearings can't cause the clutch to slip. If a bearing is bad, then you will probably hear a whining type of noise when moving with the clutch engaged. It might vibrate when moving/engaging too, but I don't know, I've never had one of the bearings be bad.

As long as you go easy on the clutch, it will still last you a few more months, mine lasted me probably 4-5 months after it started slipping. Just go easy on it until you feel like getting a new clutch.
