clutch hydraulics, which component

got the new clutch in my 84 GSL. bled the hydraulics very well. took the car around the block for the first time today but came back a tad dissapointed. when the car is stopped and you are pressing the clutch pedal to the floor, the hydraulics lose a lot of pressure. the pressure is so bad that the car will move as soon as you start to lift your foot off of the clutch and then you will have to pick the clutch pedal up off of the floor. once under way and driving the clutch pressure is fine and shifting gears is not a problem and the clutch pedal stays as it should. i have no leaks in the system and it was bled through a full resivoir of dot 3 synthetic(which i use in all of my 7's). would you guys try and tackle the master cylinder first or would you start with the slave and hose? i have spare slaves and hoses... i am just broke and dont want to spend more than i have to(although i know the slave/hose and maser should be replaced as a pair).

I had the same issue.

On the slave there is a rubber boot that covers the shaft. remove it, and see if there is any fluid in it, if there is than fluid and pressure is getting past the seal on the piston.

My new slave was $23, so its cheap and easy to replace.

If it's the master than fluid will be dripping down the inside of the firewall above the clutch pedal.

My new one of those was $73, and the only hard part was the top bolt!

In these cases, the easiest thing to do is actually replace the master and slave in a pair if one is damaged. Keeps the parts the same age and makes for a better long term solution Rockauto.com caries both of them for about 70 beans for the set. While your at it, you can get new lines for the hydrolics.

He's prolly right about the slave though, its commonly that guys fault..

The master will not necessarily be leaking if it is bad. It could be a matter of fluid getting past an internal seal, causing it to lose pressure. If you don't have fluid under the boot on the slave, then replace the master.

And yes, go to rockauto for the parts...

Do yourself a favor, make sure that you have a swivel fitting for the 12 mm nut at the top of the master cylinder. Otherwise you will spend all day fixing it, and the next week you'll be visiting the chiropractor. I just did this a few days ago, and it was not bad at all once I broke down and bought the swivel. Good luck.

well i replaced the slave yesterday because i had the part and that fixed the problem half way as i had suspected. i looked at the master under the dash and now that there is a new slave cylinder installed, its putting more pressure on the master cylinder and i can now see fluid leaking from around the piston at the pushrod. the rebuild kit will be in this afternoon. i went with a beck arnley kit.

Also what made it easier for me was to remove the seat, so I could get flat on my back! At my age, I want as little contortion as possible!!

Yeah, the way I got at the master, my back was directly on the door sill, with my feet outside, and my upper body in the car. It was painful, but I'm 17, so I won't be feeling my abuse on my body for a few years yet!

I actually had the car raised up on jackstands when I did this (for other reasons), so I just knelt next to the car and it wasn't too bad.

I just did a clutch master and slave. The Master this time really decided to be a royal bugger. We took out the seat, but even with the more comfortable resting position and the mechanic light, we ended up having to remove the rod that pushes from the pedal into the cyl to get enough clearance to remove the top bolt.

I *always* do master and slave as a pair, and using anti-sieze or white grease on the nuts is an absolute must.

I did that too, and it actually made the removal and installation quite easy.
