Clutch Fluid

Hey Guys,

I was wondering if synthetic clutch fluid is recommended or if conventional is better, I remember a post a while back that i think said that synthetic was worse, but i can't completely recall and the search isn't working.

Thanks for the help.

synthetic oil was considered bad due to its inability to burn readily. but most companies claim it does now, whatever. however i don;t see anything wrong with synth clutch fluid.

Clutch fluid? Are you talking about the hydraulic fluid?

Yes, step away from the crack rock...slowly....

Just use a good Dot 4 fluid. Synthetics (Dot 5) do NOT mix readily with pre-existing Dot 3 & 4 fluids, and can jizz all over the inside of your lines (yes, that is a technical term, ask you parents). The benefits of Dot 5 are MOSTLY that it doesn't rape your paint. So, use a good Dot 4 and be done with it. My choice: the Castrol LIMA stuff. Other people love the Ford motorcraft fluid (comes in a metal can), Performance Friction's offerings, and the more expensive brands (Motul, etc.). I find the Castrol everywhere, cheaply, and flush it regularly enough so that I'm not worried about it.

Just cover your fenders witha trash bag or a $20 fender cover from Sears, and use the DOT-4, High temp stuff...

You need to completely flush the hydraulic system with denatured alcohol to clean out ALL the old fluid if you go to DOT-5... And on old cylinders, I dunno if the seals would take it... Ditto on the hose...

Not worth is for the clutch... Only worth it on the brakes if you're going for an endurance road race... Even then, I'd reccomend a new master cylinder, new calipers all around, new lines, and flush the steel lines several times.
