Unhappy Clutch is being stupid

My clutch hardly lets me shift. The resivor is full but the pedal goes to the floor. if I pump it sometimes it will relent. looks like crud in the bottom of the bowl. any and all good ideas appreciated. Thanks to all. Bob

You probably have air in the clutch hydraulic system. You can bleed it like brakes with the nipple on the slave cylinder. Usually this problem means you have a leak somewhere. Look for a fluid leak under the rubber boot on the clutch slave. This is usually what goes. These are cheap and easy to rebuild with a rebuild kit and drill mounted honer.

yea, just try to bleed it, and see where that gets you.

If bleeding doesn't help, try sitting in your driveway or something with the clutch in and the car in first, hold it like that for like a minute, if the car pulls forward while your foot is still on the floor then you have a bad clutch master cylinder.

Get somone to look at your clutch slave cylinder while you are pushing in on the cluth. Sometime the fluid leaks out of it from wear and so much pressure. You might be looking at a replacement.

If bleeding fails to fix the problem and there are no visible leak, crawl under the dash and pull the carpet back. If the master leaks, it will leak inside the drivers side footwell.

If the master is bad, replace the entire system, master, slave and hose.

If you are not leaking/losing fluid anywhere, and bleeding doesn't correct the issue, then you are probably going to be dealing with a bad master cylinder. I just went through this. I have a replacement, but I haven't installed it yet so I have to pump her up a bit before she'll behave. With continuous use it isn't an issue, but if I've been on the freeway for a while then I have to pump again before I get any clutch action. Now that the last race for the year is behind me, she'll be going into the garage for the winter so I can take care of all these little issues. Good luck!

Replace both cylinders and the flexihose. And bench bleed the cylinders (fill with fluid) to simplify bleeding. $80 for all parts from rockauto.

I agree with replacing both. And when you do that, buy a steel braided line to replace the rubber line in between the master and slave cylinders as well.

you may have a hole in the flexhose itself, i had the same problem and couldnt figure out why even after replacing both master and slave twice and bleeding. i moved the hose and all i found was nothing but small cracks from the old baked rubber and a few were actual holes letting air in the system but never leaked any fluid which was strange.

i bought the stainless braided line and now the clutch feels great with no loss of pressure
