clunky shifting

Hey, Im driving an 85 GSL. The car shifts smoothly sometimes..but alot of times it is very clunky feeling. Recently, when I engage or disengage the clutch, i can here a small thunk. I also changed out the tranny oil the other day with some redline, when I pulled the bottom plug off, it had a bunch of stuff that looked like metal scrappings on the top...Am I looking at rebuilding the tranny? new clutch? both?

Thanks in advance

Metal stuff is a very bad sign, syncros could be worn and that's offering inconsistant shifting if some of the teeth are broken. Rebuilding could get costly, look for a good used one instead. I have 160,000 km, use synthetic oil and shift like butter. I remember going through the rebuild thing with a munci behind a 396 in a chevelle, ended up just replacing the whole damn thing in the long run.

I read somewhere that rx7s didn't have synchros in their trannies....but I'm not sure of that's true now.

definately have synchros, otherwise you'd grind gears everytime you changed gears, unless you double-clutched.

th eclunking could be a bad input shaft or its bearings.
