Clunk when clutch released while in Neutral

We are attempting to finish up a motor install here on an 82 12A and have run into this apparently rather large snag. We took the motor out to replace the oil pan gasket and remove broken oil pan bolts, but other than that, motor and tranny weren't touched. Tranny stayed in the car.

So we start it up and it runs fine, but when the clutch is released, there is a nice rhythmic clunking noise. We have no ideas as to what this could be.

Any ideas? I have this nagging feeling the motor is coming at least partially back out though

Thanks

Take the belts off of the e-shaft pulley, then push the clutch pedal in and out. You may need to start it briefly while you do this. Check to see if the e-shaft hub moves in and out.

Other than that, check the tranny to engine bolts. starter mounting bolts, tranny mounting bolts, engine mounts and the slave cylinder bolts.

Is the clunking noise a single event noise or the same noise repeated at an interval?

We're idiots. Nevermind. What it ended up being (we weren't really paying attention) is that the rear end was slightly turning (gear oil viscosity we are assuming since the car is on stands), and I have 1 wheel on the back to test fit, so it was not tightened down, so it was the wheel flopping.

Grrr. Oh well, simple fix at least.

Thanks though.

LOL. We probably wouldn't have .

After further investigation, it was actually the driveshaft weights clipping an exhaust shield because the angle is all messed up since it's off the ground. Either way, not an issue .
