Cleaning Rotors

K so ive read about the various cleaners that will work well and not to use when cleaning the carbon off the rotors (out of the engine) thats not my question

I wanted to make sure as a precataution.

Is there anywhere on the rotor i should NOT get the cleaner. Like in the oil passagey place or on the bearing or can the whole thing be immersed in the correct cleaner?

Didnt wanna screw anything up.

Zep industrial purple diluted 50:50 with water, soak for a few hours and wipe off.

When I did mine I followed the directions in the Rotary Aviation rebuild video...I dipped them in a bucket of carb cleaner! So no, apparently you don't need to worry about getting cleaner anywhere. Came out nice and clean by the way!

varsol worked well for me. And a brass or similarily soft brush. NOT steel (even for the outside). Left them to soak for a day then rinsed out with water and oiled a bit. Cleaned out the cooling passages nicely and made the caked on oil and dirt easier to remove. And it wont harm the chrome finishing of the inside (i hope but it doesnt appear to have done anything).

The other recommended things will work as well, just make sure its aluminum friendly, the purple stuff can be unfriendly.

no matter what cleaning agent he/she use...of course some will work better then others...the results in the end are going to be the same but will vary...Leaved them dipped in some kinda chemical or scrub them down...either way they will come out clean...
Housing it's the same story...scrub them or dip them...I sand blast my housings...It's a quicker for me, they look nicer...and no i don't sandblast the chrome...

Sandblasting works, as teddy said you have to be careful not to hit the chrome and to spend alot of time making sure there is no sand in the coolant passages

Baking Soda in a bucket of water. Scrub.
Bearings are to be replaced afterwards.

Wirewheel is fast for the outside.

It's called purple power teddy, lol. It cleans things great. It's not good for aluminum though.

I'm in the process of media blasting my housings and irons. I'm using Black Beauty aka coal slag. It's working great. I'm staying away from the chrome. Coal slag is softer then glass beads, sand, or aluminum oxide.

I'll be power coating the outside surfaces that will show of the irons. I'm a little scared to poweder coat the housing because to the 400 degress temps used in power coating.

Can the rotors be media blasted or should I just do a good cleaning by hand?

Also, someone saif they used oven cleaner for cleaning. Be very careful when using it on the housings. It will eat aluminum.

Housings being PC'ed - there should be no issue whatsoever. They shouldnt warp or anything since they have already been heat cycled MANY times. I have my irons/housings PC'ed and still looks good. I have pics but not on this computer. I believe that if you search my name along with 'rebuild' 'trochoid' (done at Scott's previous house) and maybe 'judge Ito' you should be able to find the correct thread.

Thanks Ian, Scott is helping me, more like showing me, how to rebuild my motor. I really did want to powder coat them. It's much eaasier then polishing them and the powder will hold up better then paint. I know what I'm doing this weekend.
