Clarifying things? Temanology and international relations.

Okay... So in North America, due to the mandating of 17 digit VIN's by the US DOT in 1981, 1981-1985 RX-7's are referred to FB's. (VIN starts with JM1FB3...) 1979-1980 Model years are referred to as SA's. (VIN starts with SA22C...)

Elsewhere in the world, all 1st generation RX-7's (1979-1985) are referred to as SA's There is no FB designation elsewhere, except in North America.

As I've noticed, there are several international members of our forum in the 1st gen area. I was wondering, shall we switch from referring to SA's and FB's to referring to them as Series 1, Series 2, and Series 3 (1979-1980, 1981-1983, and 1984-1985 respectively.) as the 2nd gen guys do with their respective revisitions.

Well the majority of this board would be members from North America I should imagine. In other forums based in other countries, we all refer to the cars as "SA" models with the S1/2/3 designation.

I'm quite happy to refer to them as FB's in this US-based forum to prevent any confusion. Hey, when in Rome!

Personally I call my car an FB, but having a working understanding of "conversational international mazda" is a good thing, so I'm bilingual....

I wouldn't want the holy SA designation polluted with those nasty ol' FB's. Keep it as it is.

What next, drop gallons for litres?

This went to the US court so that you didn't have to convert. (free speech if I remember)

I learned all the funny abbreviations and what-not. It wasn't that hard. I'm with Moses; let's keep it the way it is.
