Choke Shut Off Valve?
Choke Shut Off Valve?
So I found a 85 GS for sale in the area and the guy says it needs "intake work". so I send him an email about it and this is the reply I get.
"the intake itself is actually fine there is just a choke shut-off valve that sits right on top of the intake that is bad because of this the car will not start the butterfly in the intake was stuck closed but i got that to move again all it needs is that choke shut-off valve."
my question is: Would this really keep the car from running? Seems to me it would still run but with the choke engaged. Or maybe there is a bigger problem that he isn't seeing. I don't know anything else about the car other than it is a stick and that is a 12a. Any information would be great, I don't have anywhere to work on this car so I was hoping it would actually run for now, until I could find somewhere to rip it apart.

That's the shutter valve. It shouldn't keep it from starting, but with it stuck closed, it would only run on one rotor. Check the FAQ and archives. The shutter valve is a common failure, and is not too hard to replace.
