The **** moves in and out fine, but no effect at the carb. The cable looks fine from the firewall to the carb, but I can't get at the part under the dash. I had a shop look at it and they said it needed a new cable...$200 for the part alone! Anybody have any advice on what might be broken, and how to get at it? Will the entire dash have to be removed to get at it? The two manuals I have are no help at all. TIA.

First, when you pull out the choke ****, does the butterfly in the carb close. If not, the cable is most likely broken somewhere. Second, you don't need to remove the dash to change it out, just remove the lower panel on the left side of the steering column. Third, if you need a replacement, post a WTB in the 1st gen parts for sale section, I probably have a spare, PM me if you need one. Fourth, find a new mechanic.

Last, but not least, download the FSM and carb manual from from the following link, it will save you mucho dinero.

thanks for the fast response trochoid.

1) moving the choke **** has no effect on the butterfly at the carb.
2) i took your advice and removed the lower left dash panel that holds the choke and gas cap release. after pulling off an HVAC duct, i was able to pull out the choke box. After opening it up, it was definitely the choke cable that had frayed and broken where it attaches to the **** rod. I'll be needing a replacement.
3) prepare for an incoming PM trochoid! failing that, i'll try the wtb forum.

i wouldn't mind going with a pure manual choke either. or is it better/easier to go with OEM?

Nice thing about the stock unit is how well it works, automatically. Having to hold out a broken one while the car is warming up is a royal pita.
