ON Choke cable issue

I'm sure this isn't a new problem, but I'm not finding an answer in the archive or forum. I have an 84 GS, pulled the choke out to start and it stayed out, felt like it was detached. It is attached at the carb and the butterfly moves freely, seems to be disconnected at the **** end. How do I get at it? Does the dash have to be removed or?
Is there some mysterious Mazda reason why I can't install a regular push pull choke such as the cars of my youth had?
I appreciate your help in advance, I love my car but sometimes I'm fighting above my weight class.

it could be the return spring on your carb....if the choke is not sucking back in after being warmed up to temperature..

the stock setup has a temp switch and a magnet in there, so when the engine is not warmed up the choke **** stays where you put it, but when the switch switches, the magnet is off, and the choke **** gets pulled back in.

keeps people from driving around with the choke on all the time

I know about the magnet, but The choke cable doesn't seem to retract fully even when the engine is warm. Plus I think the cable may actually be broken at the ****. I'm tempted to run a second regular choke cable in parallel and disconnect the first, but I'm not sure if I need to disconnect OEM choke sensors for this to work.
