It is used on the fuel return line about 6" from the carburetor and has a directional arrow pointing away from the carburetor. Yes it is needed with stock intake/caburetor setups.

All the stock piece is, is a simple pre-set fuel pressure regulator. You can replace it with a cheap adjustable one from Kragen or Autozone. It keeps the fuel pressure from going over 6 psi, hmmm. yeah im pretty sure it's 6psi. Anyway all that happens by not having it is you'll run a little richer, burn a little more fuel.

It shouldn't at all. The reason I say no confidently is that my car is running right now without it and it runs just fine.
what do you mean by its running crappy? Be a little more specific. Is it idling rough, does it sputter or hesitate? is the problem only at idle or while coasting or under acceleration or a combination?
Let me know a few specifics and maybe we can figure out some things to check.
Just to let you know the most common reason an RX7 runs very bad is a vacuum leak. Second to that would be a carb that needs to be rebuilt or re-tuned. And third would be an ignition problem such as a coil not working or the timing being off or even the spark plugs being in bad need of a change for new ones. Tell me a little of specifically how your car is running and I will try and help you narrow it down as best I can. Just about everyone in the forum has a good basic knowledge of RX7's. If one person doesn't know the answer someone else will.
