Cheap short shifter 84 and up...

https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-gen-archive-72/miata-short-throw-shifter-writeup-445801/

Thanks to the second gen guys who tried this setup... Mazdatrix has ss listed for 79-83, 84-88 or 89 and a third one as I recall.

This means this hack can be done for the 84 and 85 first gens and possibly others I will have to pull my shifter from my 83 and compare it with my 85.

Hope you guys find this helpful.

That should work on all FB's and FC's. The S5's have a different thread pattern for the shifter ball, otherwise they are all pretty much the same. Unfortunately the SA guys are left out again.

I've made my own short throws and they will work in my S3 or S4. I have an 83 tranny in my 85, works in that one too.

The miata uses a different thread pattern so you'll need a new shift ****...

Another thing that can be done, for those of you wanting it in between the two lengths shown in the pics is to get a die, cut new threads, then take a hacksaw and cut an inch or so off the top... There's lots of room to play with on that Miata shifter.

Not sure if the RX8 **** would fit but if so then you'd have the 6 speed pattern on the **** to confuse people.

Also note that in the writeup that the shifter length itself can be changed with the uppder part of the shifter easily detached, and replaced with one of the "Ideal" length.
