Question Cheap Horsepower?

I know this may be a stupid question. Does anyone know some things I may be able to do right now, (no money involved, that I could just walk out to my car and do it) for more horsepower? Any suggestions?

Um, I think you can disconnect the exhaust return thingey, that goes from the exhaust manifold (hot) into the intake, that'll cool the intake air a bit and might help. Nothing really you're going to notice a difference with. Maybe even hollow out the cats, but then it'll suck for emissions and it'll sound pretty crappy.

Also you can rip out unnecessary parts of the interior.. like the sound deadening.. to do that you yank the seats/carpet, take some dry ice, and drop it on the floor of the car, it'll get it REAL cold, then hammer it and the sound deadening will chip out. That'll save you some pounds.

remove everything that isn't bolted down. remove all gas but a gallon, empty the window washer fluid. take out passanger seat. remove all emissions, remove spare tire, jack. windshield wipers. hood rod and clip, radio, speakers, antennea, carpet, door panels, window cranks, ***** buttons and switches. stereo wiring.
if you drive during the day only, remove the headlights and motors!

your cas should now be faster, wasn't that easy! and free!

advancing the ignition timing should give you a few horses. But you must be really careful not to advance too far. Do a search on the forum for ignition timing. You'll get tons of info.

Do you still have stock exhaust? I'd lose it and go for a full RB system when you have cash. That's the first step that gives a really noticeable gain.

There's a few cheap things you could do. First, you could fab up some kind of less restrictive air filter system. There are a couple different ways to do it, search the forum for ideas. Second, you could eliminate your emmissions equipment and vacuum advance for a little smoother running, and advance your timing *a bit* (ie. 2 degrees). As has been said, be extremely careful when messing with timing, detonation is very bad on rotaries.

Another thing you could do is cut down your vacuum secondary spring a little bit, so your secondaries open earlier.

I wouldn't do any of this until you have an exhaust and have eliminated your air pump and crap. None of this will give you very much horsepower, it's all little marginal differences that add up when you do it all.

Definitely lose all the weight you can. I can feel a significant difference when I lose my spare, jack, tools, sub box, etc. Makes a big difference in light cars like ours. Like I said, everything adds up.

Good luck!

Hmmm so is this air pump thing a good or a bad thing? Should I be riping mine out this weekend along with any & all emission systems?

People remove their air pumps to keep things simple... Also, if you're running an aftermarket exhaust, the air pump just becomes useless excess weight. Unfortunatly, they're isnt much (if any) hp to be gained by remove it.

I would lose some weight. Since most of use could lose more than our air pump weights. LOL

Wire the secondaries to the primaries, and do away with the vacuum secondary box.
P.M. me for detailed instructions and an accelerator pump modification I came up with that will cost you a sheet of gasket paper and a small piece of metal.
(Anybody feel free...The write up is so long that it does'nt fit in the space allowed on these threads. Only one condition if I share with you this "super secret valuable mod info"...You gotta pass it along to another rotorhead!!!)
