Cheap Headers

Hey guys, I have a problem.... (again). The manifold I got from a friend (mine was missing when I got the car) doesn't match up with my block. It seems there is a difference between his stock '85 that I got it off of (not a gsl-se) and my '79 exhaust ports... There are two oval exhaust ports located just under the big round ones that are sort of a diagonal cut to the round ones. These little ports aren't covered by the manifold. It sounds like I have no exhaust system on my car because of the exhaust leaking out from underneath the manifold, and it's not street legal . Are these ports supposed to be there or are they aftermarket (like porting)?

As the title says, is there any way to bodge up some home-made headers? If you know anything about making your own headers, let me know (what type of steel, design, bends, etc...)

Thanks for the hopefully money-saving help. (I'm on a very strict budget... like $30)

Jeff

I had the same problem when I built my new engine because I used two rear rotor housings (that's all I could get my hands on)which left one of the little diagonal ports uncovered. I simply had the exhaust shop weld them up. Hope this helps.

what exactly do the two little ports do? Will I lose HP if I weld them shut?

Your '79 was designed to work with a thermal reactor bolted to the engine (for emissions controls).

The 81+ cars have a cat instead of the thermal reactor and as a result the exhaust bolt up is different. As to what you can rig up...
sorry, but I have no idea. All my experience is with later model FB's.

Just weld them up. When you install a header the flange blocks off the diagonal ports anyway. And like I said. Mine are welded up and I've had no problems.
