Cheap, Easy exhaust?

Hey guys. I just picked myself up a 82 GSL, I freakin love the car already, but I'm less than impressed by the tone of the exhaust. Its a little weak and quiet, and doesn't seem to let its self out very well. Now I don't have a ton of money to pour into the car, nor do I really want to change it much, so I'm looking for an easy swap out. Anybody got any recommendations for a universal muffler or something I could look for?

Also, what would I need to do to take out the cats? Is it easy? I'd like to take them out and we don't have smog testing here so I'm not worried about that, but I just don't want to hack the car to get them off.

Simple answer:

Easy and RX-7 never should be used together.

Not having a lot of money and owning an RX7 don't go together either.

My friend took his Scout into the exhaust shop and they said that if they see a catalytic converter that they must replace it. However if they don't see one, well a pipe needs to be made to fill in the gap.

But custom is the way to go, make sure you get the right quality/guage of pipe or it will burn up.

I've heard alot of good things about Borlas. Honestly, I'm tempted to go pick up a $15 glasspack, just for shiggles but I've heard that they'll burn up on a rotary. Is that true?

Yes, rotaries run probably 3x hotter than a piston. cheap chitty exhausts burn up.

Some guys do run borla with good results. As well as RB and one other i cant think of.

So what happens when they 'burn up'. The silencing material just is gone and looses all effectiveness? I dunno, for a glass pack it may not be a problem considering how much exhaust packing I have for my dirtbikes.

The usual choices are Power Pulse (Racing Beat), Borla, or Magnaflow.

Regular glasspacks don't last very long at all. We're talking hours of runtime, according to Racing Beat. Rotary Engineering used to make glasspacks that held up pretty well, but unfortunately they no longer exist.

im pretty sure they entire thing self destructs, like the metal as well, thats why racing beat uses thicker mild steel for their exhaust systems

They won't blow up, they just burn out and become worthless.

Racing Beat uses thickwall pipe because the thinwall stuff allows lots of noise to emanate through. It rings like a bell and sounds like crap.

If you want cheap and easy, fast, 2 things. 1st, gut all the cats and put them back on. 2nd, take off the muffler. It's cheap(free), fairly easy, can be done within an hour, and it will deifnitely get you more noise. The tone you might like, you might not LOL

blwfly: What brand of glasspack did you use? If you knock on it does it still sound solid like the packing is still there? How many miles on it?

Ha, but might that be too loud? I mean, I get trouble from my DD, which is a 94 tempo with no muffler. I cannot imagine how loud they would be. I like the gut the cat idea, except I'd like the option of turning it back into stock. Hmm, maybe I can just pick up some straight tubing

Ay, I can see a ticket already.

In all honesty? I am not sure?

My 1982 RX7 with a 12A had a loose bolt or two at the down pipe just before the cats, was a good inch and a half gap to fresh air and that engine sounded like a loud, weird V8.

If you're really concerned about noise with a straight pipe exhaust... in my experience I found that keeping the engine at low revs (around 3k) for most driving was about the same as my downpipe acctually connected.

I spent about $390 on my exhaust.

100 for a RB header
70 for Borla ProXS muffler
100 for custom exhaust work after XP muffler
120 for Mazdaspeed Protege Muffler

Sounds great, louder than the RB, but shifting around 4k with minimal throttle give great tone and not much loudness. Get on it though...

Loud and fast

Cat delete with the stock exhaust manifold and muffler is louder, but not too loud as long as you have stock exhaust ports. Mostly it just sounds dumb IMO. That's what I'm running right now as a temporary fix until I build the exhaust for my turbo install.

How loud are you looking for? How much do you have to spend? Stock exhaust manifold, no cat, and a Borla is cheap and easy, but might be too loud (I dunno). A better option is to build a full header exhaust, but that's not cheap or easy.

Gut the cats or replace them with a $100 race pipe from Rotary Performance.

eventho you might get accused of being a ricer and what not, if you just want exhaust to sound "different" and don't wanna buy the whole headers-to-muffler exhaust like everyone does, do what i did and put a fart can on it. i'm looking into headers, but i think i might keep the can on there lol. i got one of those cheap from ebay, 40-60$ (can't remember) after shipping, there for a while i was running it w/out the silencer that came with it, and man it's loud, very very very very deep mean sound tho, i put the silencer back on (mine even has a little bypass adjuster on the silencer where you can open up the breathing holes if you want something loud but not TOO loud) but most of the time, unless i know i'm going under a tunnel i leave my silencer on and closed :P. like i said you may get accused of being a ricer, i don't care, i liked it, and i'm pleased with it lol, but i guess to each their own.

Yeah a cheap fart can is also an option, but just like glasspacks, they will burn up with cheap materials. Yeah no muffler is pretty loud but hey it's cheap and quick LOL. Ultimately though it's up to your budget and what is too loud for you

buy a used Racing Beat header, buy a cheap *** glasspack, and get a good stainless steel magnaflow muffler. This is what I rock and its very aggressive up top but deep and mellow down low. It shakes change in my buddies car when he drives next to me and sets car alarms off like crazy
